Definition: Accretion is the gradual, imperceptible buildup of land through the natural action of water depositing sand, soil, or other material along a shoreline or bank.
Example
Over many years, a river deposits sediment along a bank, slowly adding dry land.
Keep the distinction clear
Accretion adds land; erosion wears it away. Reliction exposes land as water gradually recedes. A sudden change is associated with avulsion. These study distinctions do not by themselves resolve a particular property boundary, especially where beach-restoration rules apply.
