Definition: The person entitled to a remainder interest that becomes possessory when a preceding estate ends. In a life-estate arrangement, possession generally follows the measuring person's death.
Example
A deed grants Maria a life estate and names Luis to receive possession after Maria's life estate ends.
Keep the distinction clear
The remainderman is different from the grantor retaining a reversion. Merely naming someone in a will does not make every future gift a remainder interest.
