Definition: The person or entity responding to a petition, complaint, or other proceeding. In a licensing disciplinary case, the licensee against whom action is sought is commonly the respondent.
Example
A broker named in an administrative complaint responds to the alleged violations.
Keep the distinction clear
Respondent identifies a party's procedural role. It does not mean the allegations are proven, and it is not limited to informal hearings.
