Definition: A chain of title is the sequence of transfers through which ownership of a property passed from one holder to the next.
Example
Recorded deeds show a parcel passing from Rivera to Chen and then from Chen to Patel.
Keep the distinction clear
A chain of ownership transfers does not by itself prove that every lien is released or every title defect is absent. A title examination considers more than the names of successive owners.
