Definition: In government-survey terminology, an idealized area measuring 24 miles by 24 miles, also called a quadrangle. It contains 16 standard townships arranged in a four-by-four grid.
Example
A study diagram shows four six-mile townships across and four down: 24 × 24 = 576 square miles.
Keep the distinction clear
These are standard grid dimensions. Actual surveys can contain corrections and irregular parcels; a check here is unrelated to a payment by check.
