Definition: A criminal record whose public access has been restricted by law or court order. Sealing generally preserves the record while limiting who may inspect it.
Example
A licensing applicant has a sealed case and checks the application instructions and statutory disclosure exceptions before answering.
Keep the distinction clear
Sealing is different from expungement. It does not permit a person to disregard disclosure rules that apply to a particular licensing application.
