Florida has a separate licensure-by-endorsement route for certain applicants who have held the same or a similar real-estate license in another U.S. jurisdiction for at least five years. This is different from mutual recognition and different from using 24 months of experience toward a standard broker application.
DBPR determines whether you qualify. Do not skip or purchase a Florida pre-licensing course based only on the number of years licensed. Ask DBPR to confirm the endorsement route, the license equivalency, the required examination, and the documents that apply to you. TSRE cannot approve endorsement.
Sales associate endorsement
The current DBPR checklist says the applicant must show proof of a current and valid real-estate sales associate license held for at least five years in another state, territory, or jurisdiction of the United States. The license must be active now or have been active within the last two years.
DBPR requires a current certification of license history showing information that includes:
- the initial license examination type;
- current license status;
- disciplinary information; and
- the number of valid months during the preceding five years.
Broker endorsement
The current DBPR broker endorsement checklist uses the same five-year and active-status framework for a real-estate broker license from another U.S. jurisdiction. The RE 2 application instructions also direct the applicant to provide a current certification of license history and the statutes or rules that define the scope of work for the other license.
General Florida requirements still apply
Endorsement is a special application route; it does not erase Florida's general qualifications. Applicants should expect to satisfy requirements that include:
- being at least 18 years old;
- holding a high-school diploma or its equivalent;
- providing a United States Social Security number;
- meeting character and disciplinary-review requirements;
- submitting electronic fingerprints and completing the background review;
- submitting the correct application and fee; and
- passing the examination required by DBPR for the approved endorsement route.
The endorsement checklist may not repeat the high-school requirement, but section 475.17(1)(a), Florida Statutes, still applies.
Examination distinction
DBPR's endorsement checklists direct approved applicants to the applicable Pearson VUE real-estate examination and candidate booklet. Do not assume this is the 40-question mutual-recognition law exam. Mutual recognition is a different route. Confirm the exact examination authorization with DBPR before scheduling.
Endorsement compared with other routes
| Route | Main qualifying fact | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Five-year endorsement | Same or similar out-of-state license held at least five years; active now or within the last two years | Separate interstate-mobility route; not limited to mutual-recognition states |
| Mutual recognition | Qualifying nonresident with equivalent active license from a current agreement state | Equivalent license and Florida-specific law exam |
| Out-of-state broker experience | At least 24 active months of qualifying experience during the preceding five years | Experience credit for a standard broker application; 72-hour course and broker exam still apply unless separately exempt |
Before submitting the application
- Identify the exact license type and jurisdiction.
- Request the official certification of license history.
- Gather the statutes or rules that define the other license's scope of work if DBPR requests them.
- Ask DBPR whether the license is considered the same or similar to the requested Florida license.
- Ask DBPR to confirm the education treatment and examination.
- Keep DBPR's response and approval before enrolling or scheduling.
